56 reasons to get this mower, and 2 reasons not to
By J. Seifert
I've had this mower since the previous Spring, and every time I'm out mowing, I'm thinking about the review that I planned to write here about it. So needless to say, I've thought a lot about this. Here are 6 reasons to get this lawnmower:

1. It's cheap, about half the price that an equivalent gas mower would set you back. It's probably also a little bit cheaper to keep running, too.

2. It's light. A lot of gas mowers are self-propelled because they're so heavy to push around, but at 36 pounds, this mower doesn't need to be self-propelled. You can move it back and forth with relative ease, much like a heavy vacuum cleaner.

3. It's easy to start. No yanking the cord to get it going; just turn it on and start. Of course, you can get self-starting gas mowers these days as well, but they will set you back even more money.

4. It's quiet. Well, okay, it's not THAT quiet. But it's quieter than most.

5. It doesn't smell. The lawn doesn't smell like gas fumes after you're all done.

6. It's better for the environment. Gas lawnmower engines expel 10 times the amount of pollution per gallon of gas than your automobile does.

Sounds great so far, right? Well, before you click that "Add to Shopping Cart" button, let me give you two thoughts that might have you think otherwise:

1. The cord. Yep, there's no battery here, so you're attached to your house's electricity the entire time. In practice, I haven't found this too difficult to deal with; by starting near the outlet and snaking back and forth away from it, it's easy to manage. But, when I have to mow around my trees, it gets to be a bit of a chore. If I had a lot of tricky landscaping, or a particularly large yard, this would be enough to kill the deal.

(You can get electrical mowers with batteries, but they tend to be even more expensive than the gas mowers, and if you're choosing electric for environmental reasons, the lead in that battery is going to steer you even further away from that option.)

2. The optional mulching bag is small. If I'm collecting my grass clippings, I'll often need to empty the bag 8-10 times during a typical run. It gets to be pretty annoying. As a result, I usually just let the clippings return to the lawn, which is better for the lawn anyway, even if it doesn't look as pretty.

And there you have it. Six reasons to buy it, and two not to. You'll have to make your own decision. As for myself, I've been very happy with my purchase thus far, and will probably make my next mower a Black and Decker electric model as well.

4Look like an idiot, feel like a genius
By J. Tyler
Yes, you look like you're vacuuming your lawn with this thing. You also make about that much noise, by the way. Enjoy getting up at the crack of dawn, driving to the local gas station and filling up a gas can with fuel for your mower at $2.50+ a gallon? Of course you do, but you'll learn to adjust.

Your neighbors might make fun of you because you and your wife mow the grass together now - one of you pushes and the other one wrangles the extension cord. They'll ridicule you endlessly for being able to have an actual conversation with her over the low drone of this plastic (gasp) mower. Wave at them and know you are simply a being of superior intelligence who has no time for their guffaws.

Are you a total weakling, intimidated by the overwhelming task of lifting a lawnmower up a flight of steps or onto the bed of a truck (I know I am)? Fear not, for this electrical wonder weighs only slightly more than the extensive metal orthodontic gear you wore about your face and mouth until you were 16.

Be smart. Be beautiful. Own an electric lawn mower.

4Dependable and easy-to-use
By Michael Sullivan
This very basic electric is easy to use and plenty powerful enough for my small lawn. Cord is no problem since my lawn is so small, but if you are doing a lot of back-and-forth you may have to watch out for the cord. No problem to start, which is the major reason why I dumped my gas-powered mower. Appears solid enough for the price. Good Mower!!

5Very good mulching mower
By Johnny B
I bought this mower after exhaustively reading reviews all over the net. It is a very good mower. A few points.

Installation: People wrote they unpacked and had it running in 20 minutes. Assembly actually only takes 3 minutes--the other 17 minutes is taking off all the protective packing.

Mulching: This mower's mulching capabilities (at least with a new sharp blade) are tremendous. The grass was cut so fine that I thought it really wasn't being cut - until I looked behind me and saw the lawn cut beautifully.

Cord: You just have to live with it. No gas, no oil, little maintenace all are wonderful. Would have liked a cordless but too many problems based on reviews.

Mulching makes the cord easier. If you are bagging or side discharging, it may get in the way.

All in all, highly recommended.

3Great power features, light on some design and durability
By Matenai
I was waiting on availability of another similar mower for a few months and gave up and bought this one. Very happy with power, features, and options. However I was not happy with the rubber dam at the back of the mower that folds into the cutting path when pulled back. On the lowest setting the blade chopped it up. I checked installation and it was correct so it is a design issue. There is a round bottom that should be much larger in diameter so it cannot fold back under the mower. Also, this is a thin steel housing but it is steel. I suspect it will not last as long as my Lawnboy that I had for 30 years! So far it runs great and has power. It is light and easy to move around. Love the feel and the larger wheels in the back.

Most of the metal is thinner than one would expect from such a piece of equipment...I suspect this is a steel saving measure due to high prices for steel. In the long run I suspect this will be the downfall. The blade is about half the thickness of most blades on my other mowers. I have used it three times...big nicks in blades and rubber dam is trash.

I am happy with how it works for now...time will tell.

I am going to request they replace the rear mower flap under warranty...will let you know how it goes in a followup on this review.

5Works like a charm
By C. McNeil-Young
I bought this to replace a B&D model which stoppeed running after 4 years. The metal body makes all the difference. I don't worry about running over small branches as much as I did with the other model. It is much quieter than the B&D model and I like the push button start much better than the handle start on the B&D. It is really light which is surprising since it is metal and assembly was a breeze.

5Great Mower with a Great Engine!
By gadgetnut
When it was time to replace my 11 year-old Craftsman, there were a few things I knew I wanted (and a few things I didn't want) in my next mower. I wanted a quality engine with plenty of power and good over-all construction. I wanted it to have a mulching feature, and I prefer the taller rear wheels.

I didn't want my mower to be self-propelled. My 1/3 acre yard is fairly flat and easy to mow. I don't have any trouble pushing a mower around. Self-propelled mowers cost more, weigh more, and have more parts to break. But my biggest reason is you get less power to the blade because the motor is also powering the drive wheels. Just a plain ol' push mower for me, thanks!

The Basics:
The Husqvarna 7021P is a 21" push mower with an excellent 160cc GCV Honda engine. I'm not exactly sure when it happened, but sometime between the purchase of my last mower and this new one, the old standard of horsepower ratings has been replaced by a new "gross torque" rating. This is supposedly a more accurate assessment of a mower's power. I don't know...just go with it. This Honda engine is rated at 6.9 gross torque which is on par with, or somewhat better than, most other walk-behind mowers. And because YOU provide the power to push it, all of that torque is going to the cutting blade. The engine features a new Easy Start auto choke system that just plain works great. There is no primer bulb to push. For a cold start you simply slide the choke lever over, squeeze the safety bar on the handle and pull. Mine has started on the first pull every single time without exception. The choke releases by itself so you don't have to do it, and there is no chance of flooding the engine. Nice. The Honda motor runs smooth and strong. It's not necessarily any quieter than other mowers, but it does have a little deeper tone to it. I like the sound.

There are a few other features that attracted me to the Husqvarna 7021P also. It has double ball-bearing wheels which roll very smooth and easy. This model also has the taller rear wheels which help navigate uneven terrain and bumps like tree roots. The 7021P has three modes for mowing. You can attach a rear bag to catch the clippings, use as a side-discharge mower, or use as a mulcher. I use my mower as a mulcher exclusively. This mower also has a handle which folds easily for compact storage or transport.

Setup:

Set up is super easy. Simply remove the mower from the box, extend and tighten the handle, add the included oil, and add gas. That's it. You're ready to mow.

Performance:
The first time I used this mower I had it set too low. It didn't have any trouble powering through the grass, but it did leave some clumps behind (remember...I'm mulching). But the next time I mowed I raised it up one notch to the one in the middle. Now I don't get any clumps at all, and it's probably a healthier setting for my grass. The cut is very uniform and the yard looks great when I'm done.

Conclusion:
I am very happy with my purchase. Just because I didn't want a self-propelled mower doesn't mean I wanted a disposable piece of junk. The Husqvarna 7021P is a quality mower with a great engine and good build quality. It performs like a champ and leaves my lawn looking well groomed. I highly recommend this mower.

5Durable, powerful, great value
By Stonebroke
I bought my Husqvarna 21 inch push mower with the 5.5HP Honda engine in 2003. I mow about 1 acre total of non-irrigated weeds on hilly rough terrain. I beat this mower up year after year and it's never failed to start right up and offer up plenty of power through tall grass. This year (2010) during the first mowing of the season I ran over a small tree stump and bent the crankshaft, even doing the work myself it will probably be too expensive to justify repairing a 7 year old mower but I will definitely replace it with the same thing when I get a new one.
6/11/2010 Follow-up: I was able to find a crankshaft online inexpensively which allowed me to try to do the repair myself. I am happy to report that the mower re-build project was a success and my Honda engine is purring along happily once again, may I get many more seasons of use from this very durable lawn mower.

5Husqvarna 7021P 21-Inch 160 cc Honda Lawn Mower
By J.P.
What a great lawnmower!
With a little more then 3 hours break-in time on the Honda Engine , I think it's safe to say that I got a good one. I love the sound (tone) of the engine, you can tell it's a Honda ;-)
I had some deep grass to mow due to the failure of my 25 year old 5 hp Tecumseh mower RIP (served me well).

Anyhow, this Husqvarna 7021P is a serious lawn mower, for anyone that likes high performance equipment. I was very impressed with the power. The dual bearing wheels made pushing a breeze. That is my first impression. Should I have any trouble, I will be sure to post a follow-up... "No News is Good News"

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!20 HOUR UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

20 hour update!
This mower has started first pull, that includes at least a dozen times showing friends and family how easy it starts. The mower pushes nice and easy, thanks to the dual bearing wheels. The mower runs almost 2 hrs each time it is used. One thing I would like to mention is this was purchased assembled "ready to mow".
I would hardly think it would be hard to assemble, but, some people are plain stupid (present reader excluded) lol. I would recommended this mower to the highest level.

Should I have any trouble, I will be sure to post a follow-up... "No News is Good News"

4Good value for a reel lawn mower
By BBS, Bay Area, CA
I am a retired structural engineer and I purchased this mower for a daughter that has a rented home with a very small lawn. She can save $100/month by taking care of the yard herself. She particularly wanted a manual mower so that she wouldn't have to deal with gasoline and 2-stroke oil.
This mower would not be suitable for me because I have quite a large lawn and many trees and also need a powerful mower that can pick up leaves and flower petals as well as cut the grass. In the summer I also like to easily convert my mower into mulch-mode so that the clippings are cut fine enough to be mulched into the lawn rather than be caught in a grass catcher.

This Greenworks 18-inch 5-blade mower with grass catcher has a 4-year warranty and is excellent value for money. The assembly is quick and easy, just 8 nuts and bolts are used to assemble the handle structure which is also very easily removable in one piece. Unlike many other reel mowers that I considered this one has a Greenworks grass catcher that attaches firmly to the mower on each side and also clips onto the handle assembly. It does its job well and if you adjust the length of the strap that connects to the handle assembly properly and snap the supports on each side of the catcher so that they are fully extended it will look just like the picture, will not drag on the ground, and almost all of the clippings will end up in the bag. One other advantage of reel mowers, especially a 5-bladed one such as this is that the clippings are very fine and much smaller than those produced by a rotary, gas powered mower. Thus if you cut your lawn weekly in the summer you can probably dispense with the bag and allow the small clippings to fall into the lawn where they will decay and add humus to the soil. A reel mower is not suitable for cutting tall grass so make sure that you cut the grass on a very regular basis.

If you are prepared to pay 2-3 times the price then there are higher quality reel lawn mowers available at amazon.com. In particular, the best, a German product by Brill, uses harder steel for the cutting edges and will require sharpening a lot less often.

4Great product with one small complaint
By David Turner
For the price, this is a great mower. I just bought a new home that doesn't have a lot of storage space. This mower doesn't take up much space in my storage shed. It's easy to maintain, it's quiet, and it was cheap. It seems to be of sturdy construction, and assuming I will have to get the blades sharpened, I will get several years of use out of it. That's all I wanted, and it does it well.

I have a fairly large yard. It takes me over an hour to mow the lawn. Sometimes I have to go over the same spot twice with this mower, especially when the grass is longer or thicker, but that's fine. It's an easy enough task. It requires significantly more work when cutting wet grass, but then again, traditional mowers do too. My only complaint is regarding the grass catcher attachment. It works well enough, except that the fabric of it attaches to the metal frame in part using Velcro. Velcro is about the worst possible material to have chosen to fasten the catcher to the frame. Grass will get caught in the Velcro, therefore preventing the fabric to fasten to the frame. It is quite frustrating to have to clean the grass out of it every ten minutes just to reattach the fabric back to the frame. Why Velcro? At any rate, I just modded it by adding half a dozen safety pins through the area that the Velcro attaches, and now it works great.

Aside from the one complaint, it's a great product. Considering that I only paid a hundred bucks out of pocket, have no maintenance expenses (aside from sharpening the blades), have a mower that takes up little space and is quiet, I would greatly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a little work outside.

4does a pretty good job
By Jason C. Hinchcliffe
Cheap and easy to put together.
Quite as to be expected.
Cuts ok, you have to make several passes if you want to catch all the stragglers. If you insist on having your lawn all the same length then I would not recommend this mower. If however you can live with a little more natural looking lawn then it fits the bill.

5First electric mower...great first impressions
By D. Goldberg
I've just bought my first house and the yard was finally long enough to need a cut this weekend.

We have a pretty small lot, maybe 1/4 acre, and the backyard had almost no grass because of the way it was landscaped. I decided that I didn't need a big self-propelled mower, and originally through maybe I'd get a reel mower before I decided that keeping the blades in shape would be too much of a bother.

I did a little research and found that the MM875 had excellent reviews here on Amazon. This one, the MM1800, had no reviews, but from everything I see it's exactly the same but with a slightly narrower cutting diameter.

I ended up picking it up from Lowes, and then made another trip back after realizing that my extension cord was only 25' and not quite enough for my hard.

The mower is really very light and easy to set up in about 5 minutes. Starting it up is as easy as pulling the lever up against the handle, which I love because growing up, my dad's mower took 50 pulls to get it going.

The mower is very easy to push, and has an adjustable handle for different height preferences. The adjustment for the cutting height is also very well done, where you just have to move a single lever on one of the back wheels and it takes care of the whole mower.

I used the mower on mulching mode and didn't notice any piles of clippings anywhere; they were very very fine and evenly distributed. I have not tried the bag yet.

The only possible negative that I can bring up after this first mow is the cord, which is something that you should have gone into purchasing this mower knowing. I always used to mow the lawn twice around in a circle, then cut a diagonal down the center, and then follow that diagonal back and forth each direction. With the cord, this technique left me having to stop and adjust the cord a lot near the end of my mowing. In the future, I will do the two laps and then simply start at one end (either diagonally or horizontally) and mow progressively away from the outlet.

Pros:
No need for gas, and no battery to wear out
Quiet, compared to most gas mowers
Easy to push, comfortable to hold, very little vibrations in the handle
Easy to adjust the cutting height
Easy to turn on/start

Cons:
Cord can get in the way if you don't plan your cutting pattern

EDIT: I've now had the mower for a few months and used it 10 or more times, and I really have no complaints still. The only possible thing I can add is that I have found that the "plug" for when you're using mulching rather than bagging can get a significant amount of grass build-up on it as compared to some other mowers I've used, but I don't see that as an issue whatsoever.

5I'm Impressed
By Manatee Mike
I've had cheap gas mowers that wouldn't start and very expensive gas mowers that wouldn't start. No matter how high the quality of the engine there was always something that needed tending to. A couple months ago I went out and bought yet another gas mower. Got it home, put it together, added oil, gassed it up and of course it wouldn't start. So I took it back and the garden center and the people there couldn't get it to start either. Fortunately they refunded my money and took the thing back. That evening I started researching electric mowers on the internet.

A rechargeable battery mower was quickly ruled out because I didn't want to replace a $150 manufacturer specific battery every two or three years. Most of the reviewers of corded mowers were in agreement that cord management was no big deal. My search took me to this compact, lightweight little B&D MM1800. I liked the way it folded up for storage in the pictures.

When it arrived, I rolled it out of the box and popped the handle on it. That's all you have to do. The one touch height setting really works! No more wrestling with each wheel on a heavy gas mower. The lawn was a little longer than usual since I'd been without a mower for month. It didn't matter, the little B&D munched right through it as good as any gasser I've ever owned. I even used it to clear out an overgrown utility easement on the side of my home. It never bogged down or hesitated one bit. The other users are correct when they say that cord management is no problem. I've used it with the bag and without. Both ways work great. Anyway, I've used it several times now since grass grows quickly in the South Florida rainy season and I can't begin to describe how cool it is to just flip this puppy upside down on the lawn to clean it up without worrying about gas and oil spilling all over the place. In fact there are lot's of reasons to celebrate not having to mess with gas mowers anymore.

No need for gasoline

No need to store volatile gasoline

No trips to the gas station or gas smells in the car

No pouring of gasoline into a tiny tank and the associated mess.

No stale gasoline issues

No need for gasoline stabilizer products

No elaborate preparation for off season storage

No gunking up or varnishing of fuel if not stored perfectly

No need for trip to repair shop to undo storage mistakes

No need for oil

No need to check oil level

No need to change oil

No need to tip mower upside down to drain oil

No need to siphon out gas before tipping upside down to drain oil

No fuel or oil leaks and drippage when mower is turned upside down to clean out the underside

No annual tune-up

No gapping or replacing of spark plugs

No cleaning of messy, oily air filters

No smelly exhaust fumes

No smelly garden shed

No noisy engine

No ear plugs or hearing protectors

No need to keep a usage log to time oil changes etc.

I'm very happy with my little orange monster and enjoy lawn mowing a lot more now that it's pretty much hassle free.

UPDATE - two and a half years later February 2013:

So far so good! I've had absolutely no troubles or issues with my little orange monster. Two of my neighbors have bought one after borrowing mine a couple times. The blade has held its edge quite well and there's still no need to sharpen it. I haven't had to do anything to it but keep the mower clean and shiny. A cheap rubber spatula from the dollar store is the only tool you need to keep it in top condition. Use it to remove the accumulated grass from under the deck after each mowing. Lawn mowers get quite a workout in rainy South Florida where you can almost see the grass growing but the little orange monster just keeps on humming (literally).

5well performing machine
By J. Pirkle
I had the previous B&D model for over 12 years. I still have it for parts. This machine is designed a tad bit differently but it performs well. It now has a padded handle and the top deck is a bit higher. I don't like the larger deck but now grass won't get under the 'hood' that used to be there which made cleanup a bit more on the older model. The height adjuster is better too, with just a squeeze you can go up or down very fast. So far this machine has met all my expectations. I let someone else use a gas mower on my lawn since I'm having back trouble and my hill in the back yard makes walking hard for me. Well, that said, I went right back to my mowing the next time. The gas mower did a horrible job on my lawn and this man had a new mower too. He could run faster than I do but it was a very bad job. He didn't mean to do this, he had a good machine and does make it look nice for a day or two.
After I mowed it the next time, people even stopped and told me how beautiful my yard was. I do love the manicured look. I had to cut off more grass this time due to the setting on the gas mower set higher. This machine withstood it all. We bagged it which I hated and is the reason I will go back to mowing myself. We took off 13 large bags of clippings with the rear bag and it handled it very well (this was the grass left behind from the gas mower). I like the mulch feature much more myself and that is why I will use this machine exclusively from now on. I have not had to bag in over 13 years so this was a huge disappointment on having to pay someone to do a worse job.
My old model worked so well that in the fall season I only ever raked leaves once. These machines will mulch up leaves, small sticks and anything I give it. I have loved that since like I previously said, I like a manicured yard. The mulching is so fine it re-fertilizes the yard. I fertilize once, maybe twice a year and have the greenest yard around. Yes, I am a woman and walk slower than the running this service did to see how fast they could get done. Also, with my back I do the front one day and the back yard the next due to my health. I also live in Texas and in 100 degree heat I wait and only mow in the early morning or very late in the day.
I love how I can store this mower standing on its nose. It takes up such little space in the shed. I never leave it out. You also should not use this mower if it is starting to rain which I did sometimes with a gas mower. Being electric I would never try that. Mowing shouldn't be done in the rain anyway.
I never have to rake up clippings either. My neighbor lets others mow her grass all the time and this last time they left two inches of clippings in her yard. She had to have someone else rake and mow two days later just to get up the mess before it killed her whole yard.
Those expenses make me glad to have gotten this mower for the price that Amazon or home improvement stores charge. I was going to get the Sears brand but it cost more and had a metal deck. I love the plastic, it is easy to clean and won't rust. My last one is still in one piece after a long work history and much abuse.
Another thing no one has mentioned is that this mower can go forward and backward. You can mow up the hill and move over and mow down the hill backwards, no turning around. My husband used to yell at me all the time with the gas mower since it cannot go backwards. I have obstacles in my yard like wires to a ham tower, clothes line polls, trees and other items. I can go around them all with a bit of planning with the cord and have no trouble. A friend came first of the year to do the back yard with the cord and he even said he liked this mower. He showed me to store the cord like crocheting it and it pulls back out without kinks in it. This makes the beginning mowing better now since I have less cord until I pull it out for the further away parts. Yes, you do have to start nearest the plug and work outward but once you get used to the machine, you forget all about that. Just always hold the cord in your left hand and walk on. I mow with one hand this mower is so light. My right hand can hold the safety clip and push and I just had hand surgery too.
Now I hope this machine works as long as the other did and it is well worth the price I paid. My old one came to $17 per year of use. That was with a new blade and a new switch the last year before I killed it. My husband still wants to tinker with it so it may be resurrected yet. I mowed three yards back then, now I can only do my own due to health.
Oh, and I use a 100 foot cord that costs about $16 to purchase and I can use it for everything else in between. Like the electric weed eater, the Christmas lights etc so that purchase negates itself.
I only cut my cord in half once in 12 years. I was the fault not the corded mowing. I got very hot in 110 heat and almost passed out, I turned around and cut the cord. I unplugged it and that was that. With the rubber grip handles there is no danger except your human self. Always be safe, plug into ground fault plugs which should be on an outside outlet anyway.

Power and Performance
The MM1800 has a 12-amp motor to provide plenty of power for mulching or bagging the grass with the rear-bag assembly, and its improved blade design provides better cutting results.

Fast Starts and Quiet Operation
The MM1800 is incredibly easy to use. First, it starts instantly with a quick pull of the handle. And once started, its quiet operation--much quieter than gas mowers--means you can mow when you want to--without worrying about disturbing your neighbors.

Easy Adjustments and Storage
The one-touch height adjustment means you can quickly alter the cutting height of all four wheels at once with the pull of a single lever. And unlike traditional mowers, the MM1800 can be folded for upright or compact storage, making it ideal for those with limited space in the shed or garage.

Mulch or Rear-Bag Collection
The mower is equipped for mulching the clippings back into your lawn, which provides a natural fertilizing effect. For easy grass collection, the MM1800 is designed with a rear bag that conveniently lifts through the handle for easy emptying.

This Design Creates Zero Emissions
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), gas powered engines from outdoor lawn equipment produce over one million tons of polluting air emissions per year. The MM1800, in contrast, produces zero harmful emissions in your yard.

The MM1800 is backed by a two-year warranty and lifetime deck warranty.

5An excellent choice!
By Shannon Matteson
Review ratings updated 08-27-2012

Forgive the length of this review - it is intended to be what I was looking for (comprehensive information) before I bought my own.

If you're paying attention and have the right wrench, it shouldn't take more than about 5 or 10 minutes to assemble. Adjusting the blades takes another five minutes. Then you can start playing with it. I say playing because this isn't work. It's too much fun to be work. Strange, but true.

I learned quickly that the ease with which it is pushed through and cuts grass depends proportionately on how much of that grass's height you cut at one time. Reviews and research say that you should never cut more than 1/3rd the grass's height at a time. They tell you it's for the health of the grass. It is also for the health of the person pushing the mower. Get the mower set too low, and it's not very easy (or fun) to push. Get it set too high, and it's super easy, but nothing happens. Get it set just right, and there's light resistance, and it's going to town.

A good idea is to set it to cut off between 1/2" and 1/3rd of the total grass height for the first pass, whichever is more. Then keep lowering the cutting height 1/2" to 1" at a time and keep making passes until you get a lot of resistance pushing it when you lower it any further. Then, wait a couple days, and go out again and mow at the height you had trouble with previously. Keep doing this until your grass is where you want it. From there, it's a breeze to keep up with.

I can't believe I was paying $70 a month to have someone come in and mow my lawn when I could have been using this. It's so simple and easy!

Here's my assessment. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the worst and 10 being the best:

Is it easy to assemble? Yes. 9/10. Just follow the simple directions. The only way to make it easier would be to have it come pre-assembled, but they don't do that because it makes for a much smaller box if you assemble the handle yourself.

Is the handle comfortable? Yes! 10/10. The design allows you to hold it in various different ways. I like holding it in such a way that I am gripping the vertical part of the handle, which is much more natural, comfortable and surprisingly, less fatiguing than a horizontal handle.

Is it easy to adjust the blades for perfect cutting? Mostly. 6/10. It might take some fine tuning and fiddling to get it just right, and I found this slightly confusing at one point. But when you see your lawnmower slicing paper cleanly without the blades touching, it's pretty impressive and well worth the effort. Which, by the way, you only have to make once a year. I adjusted this down a notch because it can be confusing if you make a mistake. Be careful to follow directions closely.

Is it easy to adjust the cut height? Ridiculously. 10/10. Just reach down and adjust a knob on the right side. It's not even hard to move the knob! No wrenches necessary. It literally takes about 3 seconds. I wish the notches were marked for height.

Is it easy to adjust the handle height? Very. 9/10. (Just be careful not to drop the cotter pins when you're doing it.) You can adjust it super low for the very short, all the way up to comfortable for the very tall. I am 5'8" tall, and the recommended position 3 is where I like it. My 5 year old cousin can use it when it's set to Position 1. (Yes, it really is that easy to push when the grass isn't overgrown.)

Is it easy to push? When adjusted properly for the height of the grass, yes. 9/10. Even if you are small framed and spend your life sitting at a computer doing nothing but typing, you will be able to use this mower fairly easily. The only exception will be if the mower is being pushed through a very deep carpet of grass, which its weight will make a bit more difficult to do because of a tendency to sink into the grass bed.

Does it do a good job in one pass? Yes. 9/10. While you will get more grass that gets cut if you make a second pass, even at the same height, it's not necessary in most cases unless the grass was very tall to begin with. If the grass is more than 2 or 3" higher than the cutting height setting, but still low enough for the machine to mow, a second pass in the opposite or a perpendicular direction is worthwhile. The first pass does almost all the work. When I mowed my grandfather's 1 acre yard, I made one pass, period. He was very impressed with how well it cut through even the thick stuff in one pass, without needing a second pass at all. So was I. Update: You need to have the blades adjusted properly for this to be true. Otherwise it bends some, and cuts some.

Does it cut tall weeds? Usually. 7/10. If the weeds are not more than about 6 to 8" taller than the cut height, and pointed in the right direction (usually straight up or toward the mower), it will usually cut them but may need multiple passes. Taller weeds should be pulled out by hand. I have been pleased with how well it handles 6 to 8" tall weeds in one pass even when set to cut at 1.25".

Is it quiet? Yes. 9/10. It's nearly - but not quite - silent. Front wheels squeak some on mine. When the height is set properly, it can be somewhat louder than you might expect when going through thick spots. Almost silent going through thin spots, or during a second pass - unless you're mulching the previous pass's heavy clippings. I was able to mow an inch off my grass at 9:30 PM without any of my neighbors ever noticing.

Is it a good workout? Yes. 10/10. Not effortless, and not too hard when properly adjusted, this mower will definitely make you work up a sweat (I was mowing in still 70 F air after dark and sweating a moderate amount), but at the same time, it also won't make you feel exhausted unless you have it set to cut too low. And because of how quiet it is, you can mow when it's cool. I have mowed my grass at night or in the evening on a few occasions, and it makes it much more comfortable to mow than in the heat of the day.

Does it handle clippings well? Very. 9/10. The clippings might actually bog down the machine if the grass is thick and you try to cut too much off at once, or make too many passes in the same day while lowering the machine with each pass in overgrown grass. That's why it's suggested that you mow, wait a couple days and mow again a little lower: gives the clippings time to dissipate. As for dispersal, I can not tell where they go after mowing, except when they get in the driveway. They just... disappear. Literally. I love that.

Do the blades stay sharp? Yes. 10/10. This mower will only require sharpening every 5 to 10 years, according to the company, but I am not sure I can see the blades needing sharpening in anything less than 8 years, after taking a close look at how this thing is made. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if it went for a lifetime without needing sharpening.

Is it good for large (1+ acre) lots? Fairly. 5/10. If you are not trying to mow too much off in a day, and you don't mind spending some time mowing the grass and getting some exercise, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to mow multiple acres with this in a reasonable amount of time. Of course, the bigger your lot, the more obstacles, and the higher/thicker your grass, the longer it'll take. It took me about 75 minutes to mow my grandfather's 1 acre yard, which is 99% St. Augustine grass with a house and moderate number of obstacles. About 2/3rds mowable. One acre a day at that rate, or maybe one in the morning and one in the evening, would make short work of even a four acre plot. But I can see where a riding mower would be popular with more than an acre, since you really need to mow once or twice a week to keep grass under control with a push mower.

Is it fast? Yes! 9/10 I was very impressed with how quickly I was able to mow my yard. It happened so fast I was disappointed, because I was having so much fun doing it. In fact when I mowed my grandfather's lawn, he told me I finished his entire lawn faster with the Momentum than he could with his riding lawnmower, which very much surprised me. Of course this depends on grass height and mower height, as well as grass type.

Is it maneuverable? Quite. 8/10 It's easy to maneuver, but the front wheels do not turn, so you have to lift them up to turn the machine on its back wheels. It does become a bit challenging at times when space is at a premium, such as next to a fence or in a corner, but it is no more difficult than any other push mower, powered or not.

Is it good for edging? For a lawnmower, yes. 8/10 I haven't had any trouble with edging on concrete driveway edges when I overlapped the mower on the grass and the concrete. It's good along fences if you keep it straight and steady and keep the fence to your left. Then again, who tries to edge with a lawnmower? That's what weed eaters are for. I can trim the grass to within 2" of my fence without a problem as long as I keep the fence to the left and the mower straight.

Does it handle different types of grass well? Yes! 9/10 I used it in several different types of grass and weed: Bahia, St. Augustine (Floratam, etc.), Zoisia, Crab Grass, and Bermuda grasses, as well as a type I cannot identify (wide, hairy leaves) and thick clover and dollarweed. It performed flawlessly in each. In fact it's even easier to use in healthy St. Augustine grass because that type of grass is stiffer, which makes for a perfect match to the scissor action of the mower. Update: There is a type of tough, stringy grass that I cannot identify taking over my yard that it does not do well with at the height I cut the rest of my yard. If I raise the height, it's okay, but still not as easy as say Bahia or Bermuda.

Is it fun to use? Yes! 9/10 So much fun that I mowed my own yard three times this week (during winter) and went over and mowed my grandfather's 1 acre yard. Then I mowed my uncle's yard, and snuck over to mow the back yard of the bank-owned house beside mine. It's probably more fun for me than it would be for most people because I work for myself, and I spend all my time in my office, so getting outside is a treat. Still, there's something strangely and endlessly satisfying about seeing the grass pour out the front and just disappear, all without much effort. Kids seem to enjoy using it too. Update: Have since settled into "It's a chore" mode, but it's still enough fun that I don't mind doing it even twice a week during the summer.

Would I buy it again? Absolutely. 10/10.

Is it a good value? Yes! 10/10. So far, I am very pleased with it's build and performance compared to what it cost me. Presuming that it lasts me only 10 years, it really only costs $20 a year to own. However, I fully expect that it will last something more like 80 years, making it's cost per year (if we factor in blade sharpening once every 10 years) about $5 per year. That means that if I cut my grass twice a week, it costs me 4.8 cents per cut over it's estimated lifespan of 80 years. Compare that to the $20 or $30 I was paying someone else per cut previously, and it's not exactly hard to see the value.

Would I recommend it to others? Absolutely. 10/10. Get one for yourself, and start enjoying your lawn mowing. Seriously. I only wish I'd had this when I was a teenager!

How does it compare to other push reel mowers? It is clearly the best-in-class. 10/10. The ever popular Scott's 20" (6/10) can't hold a candle to it. That mower is almost a nightmare to use, adjust and maintain in comparison, between the full-contact blades that make for more resistance, resharpening each year, more noise while mowing, problems with the handle and much less easy adjustment of the mower. The Brill RazorCut 38 (9/10) is a very good mower, and comes close, but is only about 15 inches wide. There is simply nothing that matches this mower in it's class.

Bottom line: I'm not one to really much care how "green" a solution it is. The "green" movement is great and all, but has become too politically motivated in a lot of ways for my taste. I'm a pragmatist. What I like is that it's built well, works well, is easy to adjust, quiet, pleasant to use, does a good job, gets me out of the house, gets me some sunlight (when I mow during the day!) and good, but not unreasonable exercise, saves me a lot of time and money buying gas, danger from storing gas, cleaning from getting gas on me, time and money having the mower serviced, money paying someone else to come mow a 1/4 acre lawn with a riding lawnmower when the grass is only 2" tall to begin with, blah blah blah, yada yada yada. In short, it's a clearly superior solution from a purely practical point of view, whether you're thinking green or not.

Do you want one? If your yard is an acre or less - yes you do. 9/10. Go git 'em. Bigger than that... probably only if you're retired.

UPDATE 03-01-2011: I have learned that set to less than about 3" cut height, pinecones sometimes jam it. At 1.5" to 2", it starts catching larger sticks. At 1.25", it starts catching on smaller sticks and can nick standard garden hoses. At 1", it catches on acorns and will sometimes scalp your lawn if it's not perfectly flat. Places where cars park, in soft soil can become uneven like that. The most useful cutting heights seem to be between 1.5" and 2", unless the lawn is overgrown. Probably most people would be happiest with 2" cut height.

Every time I use this thing, I love it more. I think the only way I could be happier with it is if it had been given to me for free.

UPDATE 04-15-2011: Still thrilled. The amusement factor of using it has balanced out at "I'm cutting the grass", but when I do use it, it makes mowing the grass a truly relaxing experience. People stop and marvel, and nobody can believe how well it works. It's a great way to meet neighbors. I also find it more and more irritating when I hear my neighbors cutting their grass with gas powered mowers now. I wish they'd get a clue about reel mowers.

UPDATE 07-05-2011: I have noticed that for my mower, the blades need adjustment back to optimal for cutting about every 2-3 months, not once a year as I was originally led to believe. They get too far apart and don't cut all the grass blades after that. This wouldn't be a problem, if I could find it easier to adjust. If the adjustment settings were numbered, perhaps it would be easier. As it is, finding a setting that cuts paper on both sides but does not make any contact with the stationary cutting blade is either next to impossible, or I'm thoroughly confused how to do it - which seems preposterous, since it should be pretty simple. I suspect the misalignment happens because of hitting sticks while mowing. Also, I'd like to see the height adjustment notches marked for what height they represent. Otherwise, it's still mowing my yard, my uncle's yard and my grandfather's yard like a champ.

UPDATE 07-25-2011: I have concluded that the difficulties I was having with adjusting the blades were the result of me not reading the directions before attempting to adjust them. There are two bolts on either side that must be loosened before you adjust the cutting blades, which I was not loosening prior. Now it's set just right and cutting like a champ again, although I have two kinds of grass dominant in my yard and they prefer different cut heights, which is making things interesting.

Update 11-07-2011: Just returned home from an unexpected 8 week journey, and found my grass was insane when I got back. I spent some time using this mower to the best of its ability, and it did cut some of the grass, but half the front yard was both ridiculously tall and of that one type of aggressive grass that resists this mower's cutting ability. To mow the majority of the lawn, only took multiple passes. I went across and back four times per swath and that handled the sane grass that was "just too tall". For the resistant grass, which I'll be sodding over soon, and the tall seed pods, I got out my electric weed whacker. I am really surprised how good a job this mower did with such an overgrown lawn, although I do use a special technique to help. You push it over an area, and then drag it backwards. Then some grass will be bent in half, and if you push forward that grass will get cut because of being bent by the mower going backwards. It has to be partially caught under the mower for this to work. Then repeat, repeat, repeat. It's not the fastest way, but it cuts grass much too tall to cut otherwise. Long story short, no borrowing a neighbor's gas mower - but it took a couple days of work with all that weed whacking the ditch area with that horrible new type of grass getting so much water.

Update 08-27-2012: Had the blades jam completely on it a few weeks ago while adjusting it. Contacted Fiskars for how to send it in for adjustment. They sent me a brand new one instead. So... I guess got one for free after all. :D Very pleased with the customer service. I have also updated the ratings to reflect my extended experience.

5I enjoy cutting the grass again
By T. Jones
I've been using this mower for a few months and so far I've been loving it. No noise and no more fumes. Its nice to be able to cut the grass while talking on the phone or listening to music. I can cut the grass early in the morning before it gets hot without disturbing the neighbors. The mower adjusts from 1" to 4" so I can cut my fescue at 3-3.5" which is higher that my old gas mower could cut. This mower weighs around 35lbs or so, which makes it much heavier than other reel mowers on the market. However the flywheel and the extra heft allows you to easily push it through thick grass. It doesn't produce that perfect cut like a gas mower, so you will have a few stray blades that didn't get clipped, but it cuts the blades so cleanly that its almost like someone cut the grass with a pair of scissors :) I'm amazed at how well it cuts without stressing the grass. My old gas mower is forsale on craigslist and I don't think I'll ever own another gas mower. My yard is roughly 1/4 acre with a fairly steep hill in the back yard and it only takes about 10 mins longer to cut using this mower than my old gas mower. The only downside is that this mower doesn't handle overgrown grass very well. You will have to set it to its highest setting, and make multiple passes, so be sure to cut regularly.

PROS:
- No Noise
- No fumes
- Can cut higher than most gas mowers
- Only reel market on the mower that can go as high as 4"
- Adjustable handle to suit your height
- Much lighter than a gas mower, so easier to push on inclines
- Cuts grass into confetti/ribbon strips for easy grass-cycling
- Transports easily (handle quickly detaches using 2 cotter pins)

CONS:
- Very difficult to cut overgrown grass
- Difficult to cut wet grass.
- No way to collect clippings which could be an issue if you have a lot of weeds.
- Would be easier to turn and handle dips if rear wheels were larger.
- Doesn't cut tall/bendy weeds well. They bend under the mower and pop back up.
- Only cuts when moving forward, takes longer to cut around obstacles than it would with gas/electric mower

Spring 2011 Update:
This mower has made me a victim of my own success. The yard looks better than ever but I now have to cut 3 times every 2 weeks to keep the grass in check, and if we've had rain, my tall fescue is on steroids and I get a real workout.

My grass cutting time has increased as tall leggy weeds have popped up in the back yard. They bend and go under the blade and pop right back up. So I have to back up several times to get the head of the weed in the mower just right to cut it. My front yard has few weeds, so this isn't a problem. However its a real pain in the back yard. This will get better as the turf improves. However if you have more weeds than lawn, a reel mower might be very frustrating.

Fall 2013 Update:
I finally gave it up. I've put a lot of work into my lawn over the past few years and it is really starting to thrive. So much so that I don't have the time to cut it every 5 days with the fiskars, and if you ever get behind with this mower, you will regret it. Since I have tall fescue, it can easily grow to 8-9 inches in just over a week.

So I purchased a battery powered mower. I went with the green works 19" lithium ion gmax mower and love it. Much easier to cut tall grass and around obstacles. Cutting the grass is significantly less work now. Only downside, is that even though the green works is quiet, I miss the silence of the fiskars.

5Best mower I have used
By Andrew Simon
I have had several reel mowers (scott's, etc.) and found the Fiskar momentum to be the best by far. I have used it for two seasons and it continues to roll easily and cuts evently with little effort. It is heavier than other reel mowers and slightly less maneuverable due to the 4-wheel design. It is perfect for my small, flat yard and my grass is very healthy. Highly recommended.
